Lambert Wins Speedway GP and Clinches First World Title

Robert Lambert won the DEWALT FIM Speedway GP of Poland in Torun on 26 September 2026 to seal his first Speedway Grand Prix world title, dethroning six-time champion Bartosz Zmarzlik by two points and becoming Britain’s first speedway world champion since 2018.

Underdog at the Motoarena

At the Motoarena Torun, he struck first, leading wire-to-wire in heat two against Lambert. Lambert responded by winning heats six and nine outright, and after eight heats the rivals were tied on five points.

Gates, gaps, glory

Lambert and Patryk Dudek qualified fastest into the title-deciding final on 12 points. Zmarzlik, also on 12, needed a last-chance run-off to advance. In the main final, Lambert launched cleanly from the gate and led every metre, while Zmarzlik passed Dudek on the finish line to salvage third behind Brady Kurtz.

Nine British champions, one new name

The Norfolk rider is Britain’s ninth FIM Speedway world champion and the first since Tai Woffinden in 2018. Zmarzlik’s silver ended a record run of four consecutive titles, and a seventh crown — which would have surpassed the shared record of six held by Ivan Mauger and Tony Rickardsson — slipped away in the final metres. Kurtz took bronze overall, five points further back.

“I just came at the last five rounds”

“I haven’t found words yet,” Lambert told reporters afterwards. “I had a few bad rounds, and was kind of the underdog. Brady Kurtz and Bartosz Zmarzlik were fighting up there all season. They were battling. I just came at the last five rounds and managed to turn my season around in GPs.”
