The turn in the fourth set
The top-seeded Indian trio met a United States team of pedigree. The USA women's compound archery team, seeded third, came into the contest with a significant pedigree, with all three archers having medalled at the World Archery Championships. Paige Pearce, Olivia Dean and Alexis Ruiz shot ahead early. India trailed 117-114 at the end of the second set, and reduced it to a point at 174-173 in the next.
The decision came in the last six arrows. Riding on four Xs and two 10s, the Indian team overturned the deficit in the fourth and final set to secure the country's only medal at the season-opening leg of the 2026 Archery World Cup. One point separated the teams at the close. It fell to India.
The route to the final had asked similar composure. World No. 3 Jyothi Surekha, Madhura Dhamangaonkar, the 2025 Shanghai World Cup gold medallist, and the 22-year-old Pragati had beaten fourth seeds Turkiye 233-230 in the semi-finals after a 235-234 win in the round before. Three matches, three margins measured in single arrows.
A place in a long career
Qualification had set the order. Pragati was India's standout performer in qualification, shooting 694 to finish sixth overall in a 54-archer field. Jyothi Surekha, the reigning Asian Games champion, was 10th with 691, while Madhura Dhamangaonkar placed 15th with 689. The seeding held through the brackets, and the team carried it to the podium.
For Jyothi Surekha Vennam, the title extends a body of work built at this level. She arrived in Puebla as world No. 3 and as Asian Games champion, an archer whose record rests on team finals decided under pressure. This one added another. It was also the sole podium for India across the stage, which placed the weight of the result on the compound women alone.
Her own week ran deep in the individual field as well. She beat the reigning world champion and No. 1 Andrea Becerra of Mexico before that run ended. The team gold was the reward that lasted.
Another final, another single point, and the same steady hand at the anchor.
