The clean and jerk settled overhead at 188 kilograms, and Hussein Metwally Abdelrahman held it. A total of 341. A junior world title, taken in front of a home crowd in Ismailia. For the third year in a row, Egypt had made a world champion, and this time it did so in its own hall.

The lift closed a session Metwally had controlled from the opening round. He snatched 153 kilograms for gold in the first half, edging Bobumirzo Yokubov of Uzbekistan, who reached 152 before slipping down the standings. The contest then turned on the clean and jerk. Narek Mkrtchyan of Armenia posted 186 to finish on 336. Didarbek Jumabayev of Turkmenistan matched the effort at 187 for 335. Metwally answered with 188, and the margin held. Silver and bronze were separated by a single kilogram; the champion sat five clear of them both.

The numbers carry the weight of the day. His 153-188-341 stood 35 kilograms above his previous best international total, a jump made after moving up in bodyweight and arriving, by his federation's account, well prepared. Egypt had waited for its first champion of the week, and Metwally delivered it on the fourth day, on a card that also brought world records for hosts and for China. The room, by every account, rose with him.

A third title, a new weight

The result completes an unusual sequence. Metwally won twice as a Youth, first at 67 kilograms, then at 73, before stepping up again to take the junior crown. Three world titles across three bodyweight categories, each a class heavier than the last, is not a path many follow. It asks the lifter to rebuild strength for a larger frame without losing the timing that made the smaller frame quick. Metwally has done it while still young enough to remain in the junior ranks.

The groundwork was visible over the winter. In December he lifted well in Doha at the Qatar Cup, his only competition abroad before Ismailia, a quieter outing away from the federation's own calendar. What looked then like a step became, in May, a full stride. The jump in total suggests the move to the heavier category was not a gamble but a plan, patiently laid and delivered on the platform that mattered most.

For an athlete still early in his story, the trajectory reads cleanly: youth promise turned into junior authority, and a home championship turned into the record of it. There are heavier bars ahead, and more crowded fields at senior level. For now, the tally is simple. Three titles. Three categories. One hall in Ismailia that saw the last of them.

He is nineteen, and the climb has only changed weight class.
