At Cloudbreak in pumping six-to-eight-foot swell, Cole Houshmand met three-time world champion Gabriel Medina in the Final of the Corona Fiji Pro and walked away with a 16.87 to 15.17 victory. It was the Californian's third Championship Tour win, and it lifted him ten places to world No. 17.
A 10 that was not enough
The Final began slowly. Both surfers misread the sets and found themselves out of position while Cloudbreak lit up around them. Then Houshmand took hold of the heat, blending power turns on the open face with short, punchy tube rides.
He posted an 8.50 and backed it up with another excellent score, building a two-wave total of 16.87. Medina answered with the only thing that could shift the pressure — a perfect 10. Houshmand held his ground through the dying minutes as the ocean fell quiet and the scoreline stood.
Three finals, three titles
The win made Houshmand a perfect three-for-three in Championship Tour Finals. He reached this one by cutting through reigning world champion Yago Dora in the quarter-finals and Leo Fioravanti in the semi-finals, where a near-perfect 9.43 sent him into the decider.
Earlier in 2026, Houshmand had lost six times in the first round and was surfing Challenger Series events simply to protect his qualification. The Fiji result swung his season entirely the other way, carrying him inside the top-22 cutoff.
"I didn't know if I was going to requalify, losing the first round of every event and just questioning everything, but it all worked out," Houshmand said. "To go up against Gabby in the Final and have him get a 10… he's been my inspiration my whole life, so I'm just speechless."
The contest handed out three perfect tens across its return as a full-time tour stop. Houshmand stood on the podium having absorbed one of them and still won.
