Guillemot Wins Road Mile World Title in European Record 4:22.74

Agathe Guillemot timed her kick to perfection on the streets of Copenhagen, capturing the women's road mile world title in a world-leading European record of 4:22.74 at the World Athletics Road Running Championships.

150 metres from second to first

Freweyni Hailu set the terms from halfway, pushing strongly and threatening to pull clear of the 48-strong field. The Ethiopian, a silver medallist in Riga three years earlier, looked the likely winner as the course bent back towards Parken Stadium.

Guillemot refused to break. She stayed close through the turn at 2:44, drew level with around 150 metres remaining, then swept into the lead and accelerated hard. Daylight opened between her and the chasers, and she crossed the line smiling before folding her arms.

A first global gold after a long season

The French 27-year-old finished almost half a second inside Jemma Reekie's European record of 4:23.25, set earlier that month, and climbed to fourth on the world all-time list. Hailu took silver in 4:24.35, while Kenya's Mirriam Cherop claimed bronze.

The victory came after three weekends of racing that had offered little warning. Guillemot placed sixth at the Diamond League Final in Brussels and eighth at the World Ultimate Championship in Budapest, her track form giving no hint of what was to come.

"It has been a very long season, with a lot of races and some difficult moments," she told reporters afterwards. "It wasn't a perfect season, but it had a perfect ending."

Guillemot's year already included mixed relay silver at the World Cross Country Championships and a French 1500m record of 3:56.24 in Paris. A former heptathlete, she now holds an individual global title — her first — earned with the patience and timing of an athlete who thrives across disciplines.
