Sina Frei raced clear on a hard Val di Sole course to become the elite cross-country world champion. It is the first individual elite XCO world title of her career. The win came on home-friendly Alpine terrain, five years after the venue last staged the Worlds.

A lap-three attack that broke the race open

Frei and defending champion Jenny Rissveds broke clear on the opening climb. Frei led at the end of the first full lap, then settled into a leading pair with Italy's Martina Berta. On the third lap she pressed hard and opened an 11-second gap.

From there the race became a solo. By lap four her lead over Berta had grown to 27 seconds, with Nicole Koller 43 seconds back. Entering the final lap, Frei rode alone with a margin of one minute and nine seconds over the chasers.

She crossed the line in 1:27:50 after seven laps. Berta took silver on home soil, edging Koller for second in a late fight for the minor medals. Rissveds faded after a puncture and a slow wheel change, starting lap four back in eighth.

From a Tokyo silver to the rainbow jersey

The result adds the biggest individual honour to a steady career. Frei is a former U23 world champion and won XCO silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. That medal came in a Swiss sweep with Jolanda Neff, the first time one nation took all three cycling medals in an event since 1904.

She arrived in Val di Sole in strong form, carrying two recent wins from Les Gets. Coverage held her and Rissveds as the top favourites before the start. Frei answered by leading almost from the gun.

The rainbow jersey now sits alongside her Olympic silver and team relay success. For a rider long counted among the sport's most consistent, it is the title that had stayed out of reach.
