On a grey Sunday in Paris, Novak Djokovic achieved what no man had done in nearly half a century. He defeated Andy Murray in the French Open final to complete the career Grand Slam and, for the first time since Rod Laver in 1969, held all four major titles at once — the only player ever to do so across three different surfaces.
Down a set, then a landslide
Murray took the opening set 6–3, pressing Djokovic with deep returns and forcing errors from the baseline. The match turned sharply at the start of the second. Djokovic broke right away, levelled the contest at 6–1, and did not let go.
He carried that momentum into the third, winning it 6–2 behind clean winners and constant net pressure. Across the full match, Djokovic struck 41 winners to Murray’s 23 and won 26 of 33 points when he came forward, closing the door with a 6–4 fourth set.
The fourth jewel of twelve
The title was Djokovic’s twelfth major and his first at Roland‑Garros, the tournament that had kept him waiting through three lost finals. He arrived in Paris holding the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open crowns. The French Open was the missing piece — and by lifting it, he joined the smallest circle in the sport.
During the fortnight he passed his 200th week at world No. 1 and his 100th consecutive week there. His ranking points climbed to 16,950, a record no player had posted before.
Murray, appearing in his first Paris final — the first British man to do so since Bunny Austin in 1937 — had himself now reached every major final. But on this afternoon the history belonged to the Serb.
The rain that had upset the earlier rounds held off, and on a dry court Djokovic closed a circle he had been tracing since his first major in Melbourne eight years earlier.
