Joe Dean overturned a seven-shot final-round deficit to win the Husqvarna British Masters at The Belfry, claiming his maiden DP World Tour title. The world number 292 closed with a course record-equalling 63 to finish on 14-under par, three strokes clear of the field.
A charge built on nine birdies
The 32-year-old Englishman began Sunday in a tie for 25th after completing his weather-delayed third round early that morning. He birdied two of his last four holes just to reach that position, still seven shots adrift. The gap looked unbridgeable.
Then the final round proper began. Dean birdied the second and reached the par-five third in two, two-putting from 40 feet for another gain. Further birdies at the fourth and sixth sent him to the turn in 32, but with leaders still well ahead, the round felt like a strong finish rather than a winning one.
A lead that arrived from nowhere
He kept coming. A birdie at the 10th, back-to-back gains from the 12th, and suddenly the gap was closing. He lipped out for birdie at the 15th, but the leaderboard shifted when overnight co-leader Marco Penge bogeyed the eighth behind him.
Dean grabbed the lead outright with a tap-in birdie at the par-five 17th, then holed a 10-foot putt at the last for his ninth birdie of the day. He finished over 90 minutes before Penge, whose challenge ended with a bogey from the trees at the 17th. Four players tied for second, three shots back.
"Winning wasn't anywhere in my thoughts," Dean told reporters afterwards. "My goal today was to basically try and shoot under par… just trying to get inside the top 15."
A delivery driver's long road
Dean spent nearly four years delivering groceries to fund his career when he held no tour card. In July he won the Open Last-Chance Qualifier with a 68 to secure a spot at the 154th Open Championship. He married his wife Emily after that week, and she caddied for him at The Belfry.
The victory placed him atop the early Ryder Cup points list. For a player who stacked supermarket deliveries to keep playing, the climb looked a long way from complete.
