Courtney Dauwalter crossed back into Silverton in the early hours and kissed the rock in 26:03:10. The clock told the story before the crowd did. She had reset her own clockwise course record of 26:11:49, set two years earlier, taking more than eight minutes off it, and claimed her fourth Hardrock 100 win in four finishes.
How the race was decided
The 2026 edition ran clockwise through the San Juan Mountains, a 102-mile loop with more than 33,000 feet of climbing and an average altitude near 11,000 feet. At 6 a.m. on Friday, July 10, Dauwalter set off from Silverton among 147 starters into the predawn dark. She led almost from the gun.
Wearing her trademark long shorts, Dauwalter came through the Chapman aid station at mile 18 in just under four hours, ahead of every other runner in the field. By Kroger's Canteen at mile 33, her lead over Careth Arnold had grown to 43 minutes, and she was 30 minutes inside course-record pace. At Sherman, mile 73, she was 47 minutes up on the record, brushing her teeth and taking eye drops, all business.
The margin then narrowed. By Maggie Gulch at mile 87 her cushion on the record had shrunk to 25 minutes as stomach trouble set in, and at Cunningham Gulch, mile 93, she ran quietly through a hard patch as the gap kept dwindling. Over the final nine miles she dug in and held the record. She finished fifth in the overall field. Behind her, only Arlen Glick came in within hours; the second woman, Careth Arnold, reached Silverton in 30:32:31, more than four hours back on her Hardrock debut.
A mark on the race
Dauwalter, the 41-year-old American who runs for Salomon, has now finished Hardrock four times and set a course record on each occasion, every finish falling within a window of some 41 minutes. She had progressed the overall record for three straight years from 2022 to 2024, then sat out 2025, when Katie Schide broke it. This year she came into the race in form, having won the Chianti 120k and taken second at the Cocodona 250 Mile earlier in the season.
Her verdict at the finish was characteristic. She spoke of gratitude and adventure, then of the course's hold on her.
"Dang it, Hardrock beat us again," she told Bryon Powell of iRunFar afterward.
Four finishes, four records, and still she talks of unfinished business. That is the shape of her story with this race.
