Angel Rodríguez stepped onto the platform in Ismailia carrying the memory of a single kilogram, and he answered it with a title. The Venezuelan won the 89kg category at the IWF World Junior Championships in Egypt on 6 May 2026 with a total of 365kg, nine kilograms clear of the field. The gold was not in doubt for long.

The contest

Rodríguez set the tone in the snatch. He opened at 155kg, moved to 160kg with his first good lift and seized the top of the standings from the start. He then went to 163kg and finished the half with 168kg, a snatch that carried a new Pan-American record. Kazakhstan's Alikhan Askerbay briefly answered with 161kg, but that lift would earn silver in the discipline, not the lead.

He dominated from the start and led by seven kilograms at halfway. In the clean and jerk he lifted 197kg to secure the total. The one blemish came at the close: after missing his final attempt on 200kg he stood nine kilograms clear of Yerasyl Saulebekov, who would have needed to equal the world record in the clean and jerk to overtake him. The Kazakh could not do it. Saulebekov, who improved his best total by twelve kilograms, took no comfort from second place.

"I tried very hard and did what I could but I'm not satisfied with silver. I was here for gold," Saulebekov told reporters afterwards.

The margin told the story of a lifter in control. Rodríguez made five good lifts for 168-197-365, and Venezuela, which had prepared him carefully, watched a plan come together. The absence of an Asian champion on the day only underlined how completely the session belonged to him.

The trajectory

A year earlier the same stage had cost him. At the 2025 World Juniors Rodríguez weighed in light in the 89kg category and conceded a four-kilogram bodyweight advantage to the Georgian winner Goga Jajvani, losing the title by a single kilogram. The detail mattered. This time he left nothing to the scales. He weighed in within a few grams of the limit, prepared well, and removed the variable that had beaten him.

The correction was deliberate, and it changed the result. Where last year he gave ground before the first bar was loaded, here he built his lead lift by lift and never surrendered it. Rodríguez, from the state of Monagas, turned a narrow defeat into a decisive win in the space of twelve months.

Venezuela's day did not end with him. His victory opened a run for the team, with a second champion arriving on the platform the following afternoon. But the 89kg gold was the one that carried a debt.

One kilogram had once defined him. Now the record reads champion.
