In Ismailia, the women's 86kg title came down to a single lift. Anamjan Rustamova stood third with one attempt left, and she took it. The Turkmen lifter closed the meet with a total of 249kg, built from 108kg in the snatch and 141kg in the clean and jerk, and defended the Junior World crown she had won a year earlier.

The closest finish of the week

The final round at the IWF World Junior Championships turned on margins of a single kilogram. Rustamova sat behind two rivals — Xu Linyue of China and Emma Poghosyan of Armenia — as the clean and jerk reached its last attempts. Xu lifted first and set the mark to beat. Rustamova had already missed one attempt in the second lift. She returned to the platform needing more, and she found it, driving the bar overhead to move past the field and take gold. Poghosyan, next on the bar, could not answer, and settled for bronze.

The morning had not begun in her favour. At the halfway mark Rustamova trailed the snatch leader, Rahma Ahmed of Egypt, by four kilograms. Ahmed then bombed out of the clean and jerk, failing three times, and the contest opened. Through all of it Rustamova held her nerve. She was, by her own account, never nervous and always confident.

The composure had a source. She told reporters after the medal ceremony that she had removed the ordinary distractions of a young life for the length of her training camp.

"I gave up my mobile phone for two months at training camp to focus only on my preparations. It was my decision, not the coach's."

She added that there were moments when she wanted to call her parents, and had to borrow her coach's phone to do it.

A young career already deep

This was a second Junior World title in succession, and the pattern behind it is unusual for an athlete on the eve of her twentieth birthday. Ismailia was Rustamova's eighth appearance at a World Championships — one at Youth level, five as a Junior, and two among the seniors. Few lifters accumulate that experience so early, and the calm she showed in the final round reads as its dividend. The 249kg total marks another step on a line that has climbed steadily rather than spiked.

The season is not finished. Rustamova is bound for the Asian Games and a third senior World Championships before the year is out. She left Egypt with a reason to stay a while longer. Her birthday fell the following day, and she planned to mark it there — with cake, she said.

For now, the phone stays off, and the title stays with her.
