Likina Amebaw won the women's 5km world title in Copenhagen on Saturday, crossing the line in 14:41 six days after claiming the Ultimate Championship 5000m crown in Budapest.

From Østerbrogade to the lake, a race seized early

Britain's Megan Keith led the field down Østerbrogade, but Amebaw soon eased past and took control. By 2km she headed a breakaway trio with Aleshign Baweke and Kenya's Caroline Gitonga, the clock showing around 5:54.

Gitonga briefly took a turn at the front as they passed 3km inside nine minutes. Baweke began to drift and with ten minutes on the clock it was down to two, Amebaw and Gitonga running side by side alongside the lake.

A surge at four kilometres, an untouchable finish

The 4km marker was Amebaw's signal. She kicked away from Gitonga with ease and returned past Trianglen alone, the gap already opening as she entered the final 600 metres past Parken.

She crossed the line with arms raised, a full seven seconds clear of Gitonga, who took silver in 14:48. Australia's Rose Davies closed strongly for bronze in an Oceanian record of 14:50, while South Africa's Tayla Kavanagh finished fourth in a personal best of 14:51.

"The track was a bit difficult for me so running the 5km today was better and I felt good – I had prepared for road racing," she told reporters.
