The moment the finger count began
After his final race — an 11th start in six days — the 19-year-old sat on the lane divider and slowly counted off each gold on his fingers. His 400m free clocked 3:41.28, a Games record that left Japan's Kazushi Imafuku a distant runner-up.
The sweep covered every freestyle distance from 200m to 1500m, plus three relays. On the Monday he won the 800m then jumped straight back in to lead China's 4x100m free relay.
A relay anchor like no other
In the 4x200m free relay, he hit the water nearly two seconds behind Japan and produced the fastest relay split ever recorded — 1:42.92 — to drag China to gold. Teammate Pan Zhanle later called him "a child of miracles."
The tally eclipsed the six-gold hauls of Zhang Yufei in Hangzhou and Rikako Ikee in Jakarta. It also tied the all-sports record for golds by an athlete at one Asian Games edition.
Seven, a number all his own
China dominated the pool with 30 of 42 golds, but Zhang's contribution stood apart. He cut his 200m free best by a second to an Asian-standard 1:43.49, improved his 800m mark by two seconds, and finished the 400m only 1.30 seconds outside Lukas Märtens' world record.
Zhang himself struck a quiet note after the meet. "Before the Asian Games, I said I would approach this competition as a challenger," he told reporters. "That is the attitude I have taken into my races."
At 198 centimetres, the towering teen already carried world relay golds from Doha 2024 and a junior world silver from 2023. For the swimmer who counted seven on a lane rope in Tokyo, the larger stage clearly still awaits.
