Demi Vollering won the elite women’s road race at the 2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, outsprinting Kasia Niewiadoma‑Phinney to claim the first rainbow jersey of her career. Her winning time over the 180‑kilometre course was 4:45:09.
A duel that swung three times
Vollering attacked alone on the Côte de Camillien‑Houde with just under 40 kilometres remaining and looked set for a long‑range victory. Niewiadoma‑Phinney and Elisa Longo Borghini worked together and bridged across on the penultimate lap. The solo move was gone, and the race reset with three riders at the front.
Longo Borghini then attacked as the final lap began. Vollering hauled her back on the same Camillien‑Houde climb, dropped the Italian, and made it a two‑rider fight. Niewiadoma‑Phinney tried again on the final kickers and launched one last move on Avenue Pagnuelo with four kilometres to go, but the Dutch rider refused to crack.
One sprint, no margin for doubt
The Pole went first with 200 metres to go. Vollering kept driving, led the sprint out, and watched her rival fade before the line. “I was not planning to give it away anymore from that moment,” she said afterwards. “That was mine.”
Longo Borghini crossed third, four seconds back, while Marlen Reusser finished eight seconds behind.
A palmarès crowned in rainbow
The world title fills the one gap that persisted through years of near‑misses. Vollering finished runner‑up in the 2023 road race and collected silver and bronze medals in the time trial. Now she will wear the rainbow stripes for twelve months.
She adds the jersey to a 2026 season that already includes the Tour de France Femmes, the Giro d’Italia Women, Liège‑Bastogne‑Liège, La Flèche Wallonne, the Tour of Flanders, and Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. The Montreal victory arrived the same way the yellow jersey did the previous month: by beating Niewiadoma‑Phinney head‑to‑head when it mattered most.
