Solveig Løvseth crossed the line in Hamburg in 8:11:11, spent, one arm reaching for the barrier. Behind her, seventy-eight seconds behind, came Laura Philipp. The clock told a story of control. The last two kilometres told another. The Norwegian had won the IRONMAN European Championship, a fourth full-distance victory in a row, and she had done it while barely upright.
The race turned on the bike. Marjolaine Pierré had ridden clear early, building an advantage of more than four minutes, but Løvseth answered on the second lap. She rode 4:20:06, a course record by 41 seconds, and reached T2 within striking distance of the lead while Philipp, the finest runner in the field, came off the bike almost nine minutes down. Løvseth left the swim in 54:57, close to Philipp, and used the flat two-lap course to build the buffer that would decide everything. Late rain slicked the roads into the city. The wind had troubled the field for hours.
The last lap
For three of the four run laps she looked secure. Her first half marathon read 1:21:06. Then the margin began to fall. Philipp, running a 2:42 marathon, closed and closed again. With two kilometres left, the gap was down to 2:13. Løvseth held on for a 2:49 marathon and a winning margin of 1:18. Katrine Græsbøll Christensen took third.
"I felt surprisingly good for the first seven hours and then I just completely blew up," she told reporters afterwards. "At one point I wasn't sure if I would make it."
She admitted an interrupted build, illness on and off for three weeks, low expectations carried to the start line. The finishing time was still quicker than the 8:12:28 she ran here on debut a year ago.
A year that changed everything
That debut, in this same city, marked her arrival: third place and the fastest first IRONMAN the event had seen, in a duel with Philipp and Kat Matthews. What followed was a run without defeat. Victory at Lake Placid. The world title at Kona. Texas this season. Now Hamburg. Løvseth holds the world, North American and European crowns at once, and a commanding lead in the IRONMAN Pro Series. She has said she prefers chasing to being chased. In Hamburg she learned to survive the other role.
Twelve months ago she was the newcomer studying the leaders. Now the field studies her.
