The moment came at Chase Stadium in a CONCACAF Champions Cup tie against Nashville SC. Sergio Reguilón pushed a low ball from the left into the centre of the box. Messi met it with a grounded left-footed finish that left the goalkeeper with no chance.
The early goal put Inter Miami ahead on the night and brought the tie level on aggregate. It was a landmark almost 21 years in the making, dating back to a teenager's first senior goal for Barcelona in May 2005.
A record met by one, chased by none
The 900 goals stretch across four clubs and one national team. He scored 672 for Barcelona, 32 for Paris Saint-Germain, and has now tallied 81 in 93 games for Inter Miami. His 115 goals for Argentina include the two that helped win the 2022 World Cup.
The evening carried a sharp edge. Nashville drew level in the 74th minute, and the 1-1 result sent the visitors through on aggregate. Messi's milestone landed on the same night his club's continental run ended.
Javier Mascherano, his manager, kept his words spare. "A privileged spectator, nothing more, nothing less," he told reporters afterwards.
