Marc Márquez sealed his eighth world championship with a last-corner victory over Fabio Quartararo at the Thailand Grand Prix. The 26-year-old Spaniard clinched his sixth premier-class crown at Chang International Circuit on 6 October 2019. He secured the title with four rounds to spare.
A duel decided in the final metres
Márquez spent most of the afternoon tucked behind the French rookie, waiting. He attacked for the lead under braking at Turn 3 on the last lap, but Quartararo fought back immediately. Exiting the final bend, Márquez cut underneath and drove past to win by 0.171 seconds.
An earlier attempt on lap 23 failed when Márquez ran wide. Quartararo then dived inside at the last corner, but the Honda had just enough drive. The rookie later told reporters, “If I didn't try this move in the last corner, I don't go home.”
A season of relentless numbers
The 2019 campaign rewrote the record books. Márquez amassed 420 points from 19 races, the highest single-season tally in history. He collected 12 wins and podiums in 18 rounds, finishing with a record 151-point margin over Andrea Dovizioso.
By round 14 he had already scored more points than in all of 2016 or 2017. Yet his approach in Buriram remained simple. “I was planning the weekend to try to win the race,” he said afterwards, “it doesn't matter about the championship.”
The title placed him one premier-class crown from Valentino Rossi and two from Giacomo Agostini. It was a peak struck before the long injury shadow that would later fall. The championship stood sealed on a last corner, the only way he ever really wanted it.
