Léon Marchand won his first European title in the 200 m butterfly at the 2026 European Aquatics Championships in Paris. He touched in 1:51.72, a dominant performance at the Centre Aquatique Olympique.

A gap that told the story

The race unfolded on 15 August before a loud home crowd in the same pool where he won Olympic gold. Marchand pulled clear and never looked threatened.

Hungary’s Hubert Kós took silver in 1:54.06. The margin was a striking 2.34 seconds. Greece’s Apostolos Siskos finished third in 1:54.13.

A missing line added

For all his global medals, a continental crown had never sat on his shelf. The win filled that gap cleanly in front of a French audience.

Before the final, Marchand offered a quiet hope. “I hope it will be the same tomorrow,” he told reporters, and the race matched his wish.

A first European title does not reshape a legacy built on Olympic gold, but it closes a small circle in a home pool that knows his stroke well.
