In the 1999–2000 World Cup season, Hermann Maier gathered 2,000 points and won every men's title on offer: the overall, the downhill, the super-G and the giant slalom. It was the first time a men's skier had reached that figure in a single winter.
Bormio finale seals a clean sweep of four crystal globes
The season closed at the World Cup finals in Bormio, Italy, in March 2000. On 16 March Maier won the super-G in 1:40.08, part of a week that ran from downhill to slalom.
His margin told the story of the whole season. Maier finished 1.91 seconds clear of fellow Austrian Fritz Strobl, with Andreas Schifferer and Werner Franz tied for third. Austrians filled the top four places.
Ten wins, four titles, a record that held for years
Across the winter Maier took ten victories and stood on the podium twenty-two times. He held 0.00 FIS points in each of the four disciplines he won, a rare mark of complete dominance.
The points total set a benchmark that endured. Tina Maze passed it with 2,414 points in 2013, and among the men Maier's figure was not beaten until Marco Odermatt in 2023.
The season sat at the centre of a long run of strength. Maier had already completed his Olympic double at Nagano in 1998, and the following winter he claimed a third overall title, again with nearly double the points of his nearest rival.
His career would later close with 54 World Cup wins, third on the men's all-time list. Measured against all of it, the winter of 2000 remains the clearest picture of Hermann Maier at full flight.
