In the twenty-ninth minute in Houston, Kaishu Sano did what no forecast allowed.
He stole a misplaced pass in midfield before his right-footed shot from above the half-circle put Japan ahead against Brazil.
It was his first goal for his country. The stage was the World Cup Round of 32, and the opponent had won the tournament five times.
The goal, and the hour that followed
The move began with a Brazilian error.
Sano picked up on Danilo's poor pass and breezed past Casemiro to score from the edge of the box.
He made a solo run from the halfway line, before shooting low from outside the penalty area into the bottom left corner of the net.
The shot beat Alisson to give Japan the lead in the 29th minute.
The finish carried an edge of jeopardy.
Sano was a controversial scorer, already on a yellow card for a tackle on Vinicius Junior, and the subject of Brazilian protests over an earlier challenge on Matheus Cunha.
Then Japan held.
The Samurai Blue led a powerhouse nation for nearly the entire first half and well into the second. Their goal from Sano in the 29th minute was not a fluke. They defended, they organised, they pushed back when Brazil levelled.
Casemiro missed a sitter early in the second half, his close-range header cleared off the line.
The equaliser came soon after.
Casemiro scored on 56 minutes and Martinelli on 90+5; Sano's goal on 29 remained Japan's only reply.
Vinicius Jr was denied a wonder goal by a fine Suzuki save against the post, but substitute Martinelli curled in the winner in the 96th minute after being played in by Guimaraes.
The final margin was 1-2.
A first mark in the blue
The result carried a familiar ache.
The defeat marked the third consecutive World Cup in which Japan lost after leading in the knockout rounds, following losses to Croatia in 2022 and Belgium in 2018.
Japan had reached the last 32 as runners-up in Group F, after draws with the Netherlands and Sweden and a win over Tunisia.
For the Mainz midfielder, though, the day held a private landmark inside a national disappointment: a maiden international goal, struck against the best.
The manager measured the loss plainly.
"We got off to a good start in the first half, scored first, and had a good flow going,"
Hajime Moriyasu told reporters afterwards.
He added that he was devastated after giving everything, that the players and staff had worked tirelessly, and that he wanted to use the result to become a stronger team.
