Isabel Gose won the women's 3km knockout sprint at the 2026 European Aquatics Championships in Paris, claiming her first open-water European title with a time of 6:41.0 on the River Seine.

A tactical masterclass from the first buoy

The final became a showcase of control. Gose hit the front by the first turning buoy and never surrendered the lead, kicking clear down the first half of the finishing straight.

Hungary's Bettina Fabian took silver and Italy's Ginevra Taddeucci claimed bronze, but neither could close the gap Gose had carved out in the cold Seine waters.

Cold water, hot form across three rounds

The day began in the coldest conditions of the week, with athletes hesitating to shed their tracksuits before the opening 1500-metre heats. Gose won her first-round heat 23 seconds faster than the other heat winner, Linda Caponi of Italy.

In the second round, qualifying margins tightened dramatically — one heat saw the top five separated by just 1.2 seconds. Gose navigated the chaos and entered the ten-woman final as the clear favourite.

A pool star conquers unfamiliar terrain

Gose is a 1500-metre freestyle World champion and an Olympic bronze medallist from the Paris 2024 Games. This open-water gold adds a new layer to her career on the same riverfront where she stood on an Olympic podium two years earlier.

"It was pretty important that I was able to go into the front the way up and keep the girls behind me so that I'm going to have free space for my swim," she told reporters afterwards.

The result reversed a rivalry with Fabian that began at the 2025 World Championships in Singapore, where the Hungarian had finished ahead.
