From a qualifying scramble to a last-trick knife-edge
Twenty-four hours earlier Huston had nearly failed to make the final. He arrived on Saturday with none of that trouble showing. Across the three-part course he was precise from the start, winning each section outright.
The contest tightened into what was later called one of the great nail-biting finishes the X Games has seen. Rodriguez, the Los Angeles 2012 gold medalist, held the advantage deep into the closing exchange.
On his final trick of the entire competition, the 18-year-old stomped his attempt clean and edged past Rodriguez. The margin was gone, settled on the last roll of the dice.
Two golds in a month, a decade already built
The Barcelona gold backed up his win at X Games Foz do Iguaçu just four weeks earlier. It was his second consecutive X Games title and cemented a season where he had been the man to beat at almost every Street League stop since the series began in 2010.
Rodriguez and Huston had traded podium places for years. The podium here read like a who's-who of street skating: Manny Santiago in bronze, Sean Malto fourth, Luan Oliveira fifth.
Huston had already banked the inaugural Street League tour title as a 15-year-old. Five years on, the prize-money record belonged to a skater whose dominance had become the baseline of professional street competition.
