Steve Guerdat entered the main arena at Aachen as the last rider, carrying 0.86 penalties and the weight of a career's final ambition. He left it as world champion, the one major title that had eluded him finally in his hands.
A clear round when nothing less would do
Guerdat and the bay mare Dynamix de Belheme had not lowered a single rail all week. Before a sold-out crowd of 40,000 at the Soers stadium, they entered the decider tied for the lead with Germany's Daniel Deusser. The home nation had already taken team gold on Friday, and the stadium still thrummed with that victory.
Guerdat needed one more faultless trip and he delivered it, guiding Dynamix through the final course without error. "Once I jumped the last fence, all the emotion came up," he told reporters afterwards.
From Olympic gold to a complete set of crowns
The Olympic champion from London 2012 and European gold medallist from Milan 2023 had collected three World Cup Finals and an individual world bronze at Tryon 2018. Yet world gold had never been his. With this result he becomes the first Swiss athlete to claim the Individual Jumping world crown.
Belgium's Thibeau Spits took silver on 5.60 penalties. Britain's Harry Charles rode from 23rd up to bronze at 7.17, the day's largest move up the leaderboard.
For Dynamix de Belheme, the medal extended an extraordinary championship record: European gold, Olympic silver, now world gold. She has earned a podium at every senior championship she has contested for Switzerland.
Guerdat admitted the nerves had been sharp: "I was extremely nervous because I thought this might be my last shot at it." The rain that fell on Aachen could do nothing to dampen the quiet completion of a career's work.
