On a humid evening in Tokyo, Janja Garnbret secured a place no climber had ever occupied. She won the first Olympic gold medal awarded in women's sport climbing, a historic moment for a discipline making its Games debut.

A first ascent on the Olympic wall

The Slovenian arrived at the Aomi Urban Sports Park as the overwhelming favourite. The combined format tested athletes across speed, bouldering and lead, demanding a completeness no single specialist could fake. Garnbret delivered her answer methodically.

She finished the speed round with a solid placement, then moved to the bouldering walls where her fluency tilted the contest. On the lead wall she climbed with the precision that had defined her for years, sealing the gold before the final holds were touched.

The medal ceremony on 6 August 2021 marked the coronation of the sport's first Olympic women's champion. It was a moment the climbing world had anticipated since the Games programme was announced.

Ten world titles and a record already behind her

The Olympic breakthrough sat inside a career already dense with milestones. In 2019 Garnbret became the first climber to win gold in all three disciplines at a single World Championships in Hachioji. That same season she swept all six Bouldering World Cups, topping 74 of 78 problems.

No other competition climber had ever managed a perfect season. The run cemented her status as the sport's dominant force even before the Olympic flame reached Tokyo. Later context proved the gold was no isolated peak.

Garnbret defended her title at Paris 2024 and by 2025 had extended her record to ten senior world titles. The first Olympic gold rested lightly on an athlete already building the next chapter.
