On 15 November 2021, Janja Garnbret of Slovenia became the first woman to onsight a grade 8c (5.14b) sport route. She climbed the line on an outdoor wall in Spain on her first attempt, with no prior practice.

A clean read on Spanish rock

The climb unfolded on natural stone. In onsight style, Garnbret had no notes, no chalk marks, and no chance to rehearse any sequence. She had to read the wall from the ground and commit to each move as it appeared above her.

No woman had managed an 8c onsight before. The grade demands power, precision, and the ability to solve movement puzzles while fighting a pump. Garnbret met it without a second try.

A career of firsts, extended

The Spanish onsight joined a career built on pushing thresholds. Just months earlier, she had won the first Olympic gold in women's sport climbing at the Tokyo Games. She competed in the combined format and delivered under the brightest lights the sport had ever known.

In 2019, Garnbret produced a competitive season without parallel. She took bouldering, lead and combined gold at the Hachioji World Championships. That same year she won every Bouldering World Cup she entered, topping 74 of 78 problems.

Later landmarks would follow, including a defence of her Olympic title in Paris, a tenth senior world title in Seoul, and the first female ascent of Bibliographie at 9b+. The 8c onsight stands quietly among these milestones—a statement on rock, without a crowd or a timer.
