Simone Biles reclaimed the Olympic all-around title on 1 August 2024, three years after withdrawing from the same event in Tokyo. Her win at the Paris Games gave her a second all-around gold, eight years after her first.
A return that was far from certain
Biles walked onto the floor at Bercy Arena days after leading the United States to team gold. In Tokyo she had lost air awareness, a condition gymnasts call the twisties, and stepped away from the sport for two years. Her return to this stage was not something anyone took for granted.
In Paris she worked through all four apparatus with clean, high-difficulty routines. There was no single turning point. The win was built on steady execution that showed no trace of the doubt that stopped her three years before.
Two all-around titles, eight years apart
Biles first won this title in Rio in 2016, one of four golds she took home from those Games. She now holds 30 world championship medals and is the most decorated gymnast in history. Her sixth world all-around title came just last year in Antwerp.
Her Paris programme delivered team gold, the all-around title, and vault gold, bringing her Olympic total to seven. At the 2023 World Championships she also became the first woman to land the Yurchenko double pike vault in competition, a skill now named the Biles II.
A quiet close to a loud comeback
The podium looked different to the one she stood on as a teenager, but the gymnast at its centre had not changed. The achievement stands as a chapter that began the moment she chose to walk back into a gym and start over.
