Bednarek Wins 200m in 19.52 for Ultimate Sprint Double

Kenny Bednarek completed the sprint double at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, winning the 200 m in a world-leading 19.52 to become the event's first Ultimate Champion.

The American led from the halfway stage and pulled clear off the bend, running alone to the line into a slight headwind of -0.1 m/s. Letsile Tebogo, the 2024 Olympic champion, chased him home in 19.76. The race was decided well before the final straight.

Seventh-fastest man in history over 200 m

The time was a personal best and moved Bednarek to seventh on the world all-time list. He had cruised through his semifinal earlier in the day in 19.86, glancing at Courtney Lindsey as he eased before the line.

Tebogo's 19.76 was a season's best, while Lindsey took third in 19.79. Sinesipho Dambile and Andre De Grasse completed a top five that all finished under 20 seconds.

Four silvers, now two golds in two days

The title followed Bednarek's 100 m win on Saturday in 9.85, his first individual global crown after four global silver medals in the 200 m. Those came at Tokyo 2020, Paris 2024, and the 2022 and 2025 World Championships.

"Oh my God, it has been a crazy few days," he told reporters afterwards. "I am just happy to be here and performance-wise I give myself an A+."

Bednarek leaves Budapest with $300,000 in prize money and his focus already on next year's World Championships.
